BEYOND COAL TO RENEWAL ENERGY
A Free Lecture at the Free Library of Philadelphia

Monday, November 19, 2012 at 6:45 PM
Free Library of Phila., 19th & Vine Streets, Philadelphia
4th Floor Skyline Room

Speaker:  Jeff Schmidt, PA Chapter Director

Coal mining, especially mountaintop removal and longwall mining, is highly destructive.  It is a major cause of air pollution, global warming and waste.  The Sierra Club is working to shut down existing coal-fired power plants and keep any new plants from being built. Coal use is down nationally. In PA, 9 old coal-burning plants have been retired or announced for retirement.  Sierra Club also works for stricter EPA standards and promotes pollution-free and inexhaustible energy sources such as solar, geothermal and wind.

October - Action Alert for Tuesday 10/9/2012

Sierra Watch
The electronic newsletter of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Group of the Sierra Club

All Philadelphia Residents and Members of Sierra Club!

Stand Up for the Eastwick neighborhood in SW Philadelphia at an important City Council Hearing on Tuesday, OCTOBER 9, 10 am (arrive early), Philadelphia City Hall, 4th floor. Tell a friend, and bring a friend.  This public hearing may seal the fate not only of 128 acres of green space adjacent to John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, but set precedent for urban land uses across the country.  Sierra Club SPG is a coalition partner in this effort.

October 9 is a crtical day for reminding city leaders and elected officials of their commitments to clean air, clean water, minimal environmental impacts, smart sustainable development, stormwater management that utilizes natural resources, and consensus-driven community involvement.

The high-density apartment construction proposal threatening these 128 acres in Eastwick reflects none of these principals.  A development of this magnitude and design would have significant, detrimental impacts on the environmental, economic and social well-being of the Eastwick community.  It would severely undermine Heinz Refuge ability to mitigate flooding, absorb ground pollutants, enhance clean air, and protect natural resources.

Eastwick already bears a disproportionate burden of environmental injustices, dating back to the 1960's, when 2500 acres were seized by the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority by condemnation and eminent domain, and 10,000 residents were forced out of their homes, breaking up one of the  most peacefully-integrated, culturally-diverse urban communities in the nation.  Residents resettled elsewhere while new homes were built by Korman on swamps filled in by silt, cinder and river dredge spoils.  Homes have subsided due to unstable foundations, and residents endure significant, consistent flooding.

Eastwick is home to the Clearview Landfill, a yet-unremediated superfund site which operated for two decades through the 1970's, emitting unknown quantities of toxic contaminants into Darby Creek and adjacent lands.

Please join us in attending this critically-important City Council Hearing on Tuesday, October 9, at 10 AM, in 4th floor Philadelphia City Hall.  Your presence will show city officials the importance of green space in our city, for the health of Eastwick residents, John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, and our entire city.  For more information, check website:  www.eastwickfriends.wordpress.com.

Eastwick Community & John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge
Unite to Save Prized Greenspace

Wednesday September 19 at 6:45 PM
The Free Library of Philadelphia, 19th & Vine Sts, 4th Flr

This is the first of six lectures a year organized by the Sierra Club and presented at the Free Library of Philadelphia.   Topics are focused on timely and important conservation issues facing Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Southwest Philadelphia's Eastwick community -- torn apart by a 1960s era redevelopment scheme that stalled and over-burdened by pollution and flooding -- faces the loss of its remaining 128 acres of greenspace to a 722-unit multi-family housing development and airport expansion.  Community members and the Friends of the Heinz Refuge have forged the Eastwick Friends and Neighbors Coalition to work for a better solution that addresses multiple environmental challenges and saves this critical buffer to the Refuge.Coalition representatives will speak.  Sierra Club is a member of this Coalition.  Contact wbrainerd3@gmail.com

Shale Gas Outrage 2012
September 20-21, 2012
Join us on the Thursday, September 20th as we stand up for a clean environment, healthy communities, and true renewable energy solutions. On September 20th, the fracking industry elite descends on Philadelphia for their national conference. Industry will be rubbing elbows with some of our elected officials, their sights set on expanding toxic fracking throughout our region. Their "greenwashing" doesn't fool anyone: we've seen the damage, and even with a few new regulations, the damage is escalating out of control.
Join us in Philadelphia for Shale Gas Outrage 2012, going toe to toe with the industry!
Visit www.shalegasoutrage.org for a schedule of activities.

Conserve Energy & Save Money
The cleanest way to meet our electricity needs is by getting the most out of the energy we already use.  By planning well and using today's techology, we can cut our electricity consumption, save homeowners and businesses money and create thousands of new jobs.  Improving energy efficiency lowers energy bills, eliminates the need for new power plants, increases our energy security and puts people to work

PECO Smart Home Rebates are available on central heating, cooling, water heating equipment, refrigerators, clothes washers and room air conditioners meeting certain standards  The list of eligible equipment is located on the PECO website The funding should last till May 2013.
https://www.peco.com/Savings/ProgramsandRebates/Residential/Pages/PECOSmartHomeRebates.asp x

PECO Smart Driver Rebates will pay any residential customer $50 to register their electric car so PECO can locate where the cars are located.

The EV Project is funded by US Department of Energy to build a charging infrastructure for electric cars. They will be announcing in August that the Philadelphia area is now eligible for this funding. It will pay 100% of the cost of the charging unit and part of the installation cost. Since this is federal money, the installation labor must be at prevailing wage rates. Addition information is at wwwtheevproject.com. All installations must be completed by year end. The charging units are Blink models and will be connected to the Blink Network so the Department of Energy can track usage. PECO is also funding a limited number of units for local government which  maybe coordinated with this project. This was still being reviewed by PECO last week.

The Phila Gas Works under their PGWorks program is offering rebates for high efficiency gas heating equipment for Phila customers. The rebates are $2,000 for a boiler and $500 for a furnace with an efficiency rating of at least 94%. Information and rebate forms are available at www.rebate-zone.com/pgworks. The rebates are for residential and business users. There is still over $700,000 of available rebates through August 2012. PGW will add additional funds in September.
Standard equipment normally has an efficiency rating around 80% and many older units are over sized so a properly sized high efficiency unit can reduce the use of natural gas.

Marcellus Shale Citizen Organizer Training

Penn Environment is organizing training workshops with a goal of educating 10,000 citizens who can effectively advocate against hydrofracking in Pennsylvania.  Sierra Club is a co-sponsor.  We recommend that our members take advantage of this opportunity.   Check for upcoming trainings at  www.pennenvironment.org and click on "Action." Be sure to RSVP.  You will also find directions to each site as they are posted on Penn Environment's website.  For the most up-to-date information for activists, go to www.protectingourwaters.com.
